Remembrance Day

Balsall Common Primary School has been remembering those who have lost their lives fighting for their country.  On Monday, Mr. Denness (Chair of Governors) spoke to the children and teachers about his recent visit to the Somme battlefields and the significance of the poppy.

On Wednesday Mr. Cuthbertson, a parent at the school with great knowledge of the First World War, spoke to Key Stage 2 about his trips to France, where he has visited battlefields, graveyards and memorials.  He showed the children original artefacts from the First World War including different helmets worn by the British, French and German troops, a bayonet he found in the ground and a shell.

The children learnt and performed a special song called "Ugly Sounds".  The video clip below is Mr. Cuthbertson's presentation along with the children singing.

Commenius Visitors at Balsall Common Primary

Our Comenius Partners

From 3rd - 7th November Balsall Common Primary School hosted sixteen visitors from five partner schools from Poland, Lithuania, Spain, France and Turkey.  The main purpose of the visit was for the schools to become familiar with each other, plan the forthcoming months of collaborative work and to share the culture of the host country. Each country brough traditional biscuits and sweets to share - which we all enjoyed sampling!

The guests were shown the sites including Birmingham, Stratford, Kenilworth and Warwick and even sampled fish and chips! Our partners were also lucky enough to experience one of our British festivals; Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night.

Each school has selected a mascot for the project as a representation of their school. Our red dragon mascot has been shared with our partner schools and each was given their own (miniature version) to take back to their school. From France we received a Stork; Lithuania -Amber collected by pupils from the shores of the Baltic seas; Spain - an olive tree; Turkey - traditional Turkish clothes and from Poland - a doll with wearing traditional regional clothes.

All the teachers from the six partner schools spent a long time talking about the kind of work we will be getting involved with over the next two years. Our project is based around games, in particular a French game called the Game of Goose. We will be making our own version of this game and sharing it with our partners.  We are really excited about sharing this project with our partner schools from across Europe.

Balsall Common Achieve International School Award

Miss Mitchell with BBC Newsreader George Alagiah

Every year the number of schools that receive the prestigious International School Award continues to grow. Balsall Common Primary School were one of 585 schools who attended a high-profile ceremony in London that recognised their outstanding work in bringing the wider world into the classroom.

This celebration of the best in international activity was attended by representatives from schools across the UK, and the successful winners were presented their awards by BBC broadcaster and journalist George Alagiah.  Miss Mitchell, Balsall Common Primary’s International Co-ordinator collected the award and certificate (above).

Martin Davidson, Chief Executive of the British Council, said; “We congratulate and thank all the schools for their commitment to the International School Award.  We believe that international links bring a vitally important dimension to the education of our young people ensuring that they build the skills and understanding to become global citizens ready and able to take their place in the world. I am delighted that so many schools, local authorities and individual teachers agree with us.”

The International School Award (www.globalgateway.org) was started in 1999 to recognise the schools leading the way instilling a global dimension into the learning experience of all children and young people.  It is funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and managed by the British Council. The scheme is highlighted in the DCSF international strategy as ‘a major prize for excellence in this field’ and is open to all schools in the UK.  The award is also operating in India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan. Around 1200 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999.

The ISA encourages and supports schools to develop the following:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school
  • A majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work
  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
  • Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects
  • Year round international activity
  • Involvement of the wider community
  • Provides ideas for developing collaborative curriculum-based international work with partner schools
