Pound for Pudsey as BCPS Raises Money for Children in Need

Balsall Common Primary School Council has helped to organise "A Pound For Pudsey", where teachers and pupils came to school dressed in rainbow colours. Children were invited to bring a pound coin to school and stick it on a huge outline of Pudsey Bear. £572 was raised for the BBC's Children in Need Appeal. Thank you to all those who donated.

Remembrance Day
Balsall Common Primary School has been remembering those who have lost their lives fighting for their country. On Monday, Mr. Denness (Chair of Governors) spoke to the children and teachers about his recent visit to the Somme battlefields and the significance of the poppy.
On Wednesday Mr. Cuthbertson, a parent at the school with great knowledge of the First World War, spoke to Key Stage 2 about his trips to France, where he has visited battlefields, graveyards and memorials. He showed the children original artefacts from the First World War including different helmets worn by the British, French and German troops, a bayonet he found in the ground and a shell.
The children learnt and performed a special song called "Ugly Sounds". The video clip below is Mr. Cuthbertson's presentation along with the children singing.

Commenius Visitors at Balsall Common Primary

From 3rd - 7th November Balsall Common Primary School hosted sixteen visitors from five partner schools from Poland, Lithuania, Spain, France and Turkey. The main purpose of the visit was for the schools to become familiar with each other, plan the forthcoming months of collaborative work and to share the culture of the host country. Each country brough traditional biscuits and sweets to share - which we all enjoyed sampling!
The guests were shown the sites including Birmingham, Stratford, Kenilworth and Warwick and even sampled fish and chips! Our partners were also lucky enough to experience one of our British festivals; Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night.
Each school has selected a mascot for the project as a representation of their school. Our red dragon mascot has been shared with our partner schools and each was given their own (miniature version) to take back to their school. From France we received a Stork; Lithuania -Amber collected by pupils from the shores of the Baltic seas; Spain - an olive tree; Turkey - traditional Turkish clothes and from Poland - a doll with wearing traditional regional clothes.
All the teachers from the six partner schools spent a long time talking about the kind of work we will be getting involved with over the next two years. Our project is based around games, in particular a French game called the Game of Goose. We will be making our own version of this game and sharing it with our partners. We are really excited about sharing this project with our partner schools from across Europe.
